About Kibira National Park Burundi

Kibira National Park is one of Burundi’s most important natural destinations, protecting a vast montane rainforest along the Congo-Nile Divide in northwestern Burundi. The park covers about 40,000 hectares and stretches toward the Rwandan border, where its forest connects with Rwanda’s Nyungwe ecosystem. Its high-altitude forests, misty valleys and rich biodiversity make Kibira an exciting destination for travelers looking beyond the region’s better-known safari parks.

The forest is also important for Burundi’s water systems, with numerous streams and rivers originating within the park. Its ecological importance extends across the Congo and Nile watersheds.

Wildlife and Primates in Kibira

Kibira National Park provides habitat for a variety of forest wildlife, including several primate species. Visitors may encounter chimpanzees, baboons, black colobus monkeys and other forest monkeys while exploring the park with experienced guides.

The park is also an excellent destination for birdwatching, with around 200 recorded bird species. Its dense montane forest provides a beautiful setting for discovering the plants, birds and wildlife of Burundi’s Albertine Rift landscapes.

Forest Walks and Nature Experiences

Exploring Kibira is primarily about experiencing the forest itself. Guided walks lead visitors through dense vegetation, mountain landscapes and peaceful forest trails. Depending on the route and available arrangements, visitors can enjoy short walks or longer excursions.

The Rwegura area offers scenic views around its hydroelectric dam, while routes around the park provide opportunities to experience Burundi’s highland forest and surrounding tea-growing landscapes.

Best Time to Visit Kibira

Kibira is a rainforest destination and can receive significant rainfall throughout the year. The forest remains lush and green, creating excellent scenery for nature walks and birdwatching. Travelers should be prepared for changing mountain weather and potentially wet trails.
